Being Green = Seeing Green

May 28, 2008 - In the mid-1980s, as yet another "Bottle Bill" debate raged in the State of Washington, the legislature called for an assessment of the recycling rate. Lawmakers wanted to know if the private sector was doing enough. (As it turned out, it wasn't, but special interests once again blocked attempts at a public mandate.) Charlie Scott '70, then a management consultant, was contracted to conduct the study, which he saw as a short-term opportunity. Little did he know that the "waste characterization" business, as he now calls it, would become an integral component of the 21st century greening of America.
