CalRecycle Statewide Waste Studies

Location: California

Designing and conducting California's statewide studies of major waste generators

Since 1998, Cascadia has designed and implemented four statewide waste characterization studies for CalRecycle. The focus of the studies has spanned most aspects of materials management, from quantifying and characterizing waste from different sources statewide, to conducting detailed regional waste compositions, to drilling down on specific waste streams that contain large amounts of recoverable material. Our work gives CalRecycle a detailed window into waste and recycling flows across the state—allowing them to learn from successes, identify challenges, and plan for the future.

Most recently, Cascadia led a team in designing and conducting California's 2014 statewide study. This most recent round built on our previous work with CalRecycle to further improve the State’s understanding of waste flows and composition. Cascadia managed all elements of this massive project, from recruiting the participation of hundreds of businesses and hand-sorting garbage and recycle samples to analyzing the resulting data and presenting detailed findings.

I wanted to provide some specific feedback on your team. They were terrific to work with. I was so impressed with their thoroughness, excellent coordination, and ability to tailor the presentation to the federal audience and the multiple locations. They were also up for anything--doing a waste sort in a conference room via videoconferencing! I’m sure this is not a traditional request, but they made it work. The attendees were very engaged and I sincerely believe that this training will result in on the ground improvements.
