With a goal of making resource conservation achievable for all Seattle businesses, Cascadia leads a team of more than a dozen subconsultants on this multi-million dollar program to deliver targeted branding, communications, and marketing support. We provide online and in-person technical assistance to Seattle’s 14,500 businesses (including nearly 1,500 minority-owned firms), helping them conserve resources, reduce or prevent pollution, and become more sustainable. So far, we've connected with more than 8,000 businesses and provided on-the-ground implementation assistance to more than 4,400. This program helped lead Seattle to a 20% reduction in overall water use (to the lowest annual water use level in 50 years) and a 30% reduction in waste tonnage sent to the landfill from 2000 to 2010.
Cascadia recruits, coordinates, and trains teams of multilingual community outreach partners to connect with businesses through a variety of channels, including site visits, social media, workshops, and a multilingual phone and internet hotline. To expand engagement with diverse businesses, the Cascadia team works closely with the Seattle Public Utilities Environmental Justice and Service Equity Division to support community-designed outreach initiatives using SPU’s service equity planning toolkit.
Conserving natural resources starts with free on-site technical assistance for businesses. Our multilingual and multicultural outreach staff provide in-language assistance and resources to ethnic businesses all over the city. The program also builds consumer awareness with its Get on the Map campaign, which showcases Seattle’s green businesses to customers.
