Community Change - Waste

Cascadia has a long track record of working with clients to inform, educate, and engage residents and businesses around waste reduction, pollution prevention, and recycling. Because waste is generated across sectors, we integrate community education with business outreach and media coverage, delivering messages that reinforce themselves through repetition and exposure. Clients report that Cascadia’s community-based social marketing concepts and high caliber (yet cost effective) education and outreach programs have helped them to effectively stimulate widespread changes in behavior.

Our services include:
  • Identifying key barriers to change
  • Designing and implementing programs and materials
  • Providing data-driven evaluations of program effectiveness
We also offer “train the trainer” services, volunteer training and coordination, and event planning around solid waste reduction, recycling and composting.   We work with all ages, in multiple languages, and with both residential and commercial audiences.

Virginia Mason Medical Center's cafeteria has no garbage cans, since 100 percent of the cafeteria's waste is recycled, said Steve Grose, administrative director for process improvement. The hospital composts 750 pounds of food a day instead of grinding it in garbage disposals, which had needed 4,000 gallons of water a day. The water savings pays for the bags and composting, he said.
