Free Youth Transit Pass Campaign

Since September of 2022, youth have been able to ride Metro transit for free as a result of the Move Ahead Washington transportation funding package. To raise awareness of this update Cascadia coordinated events to promote the Free Youth Transit Campaign across four Washington counties in collaboration with King County Metro—and  coordinated events with Community Transit to hand out ORCA cards to youth across Snohomish County.

We strive to meet communities where they are—gatherings with the community should prioritize the comfort and convenience of the community. That’s why we use a broad range of strategies, from broad public surveys to focus groups with specific community members or on specific topics, to make sure we’re reaching our intended audiences.

For these campaigns, we identified existing events to attend—including the South Sound Sustainability Expo, the Puyallup Meeker Days, Snohomish County Pride, school orientation fairs, and several farmers markets—and provided information and resources related to the Free Youth Transit program. Our multilingual outreach team had conversations with community members at each of these events to help gauge attitudes towards the program, answer questions, and identify potential barriers to transit access.

We attended 20 community events and distributed over 100 free ORCA cards to youth throughout this campaign! We’re excited to support our clients at King County Metro and Community Transit as they strive to improve transit access for our region and connect with communities about the opportunities available to them.
